Math This Week

We are having a busy week. We have reviewed our divisibility rules and practiced prime factorization. We spent two days learning about order of operations. The classes have enjoyed this because they feel like they are doing algebra.

Today was also our first day to use the new projection unit in class. This allows what I have on my computer to be viewed by the class on the overhead screen. We practiced our order of operations today by using a web site and class participation. The web site gave us problems and tips to use in class. We then typed in our answers and we were given immediate feed- back with the click of the mouse! Plus, they thought the wireless keyboard was pretty cool.

Tomorrow we will take what we have learned in this unit and incorporate the use of variables. I always emphasize the importance of writing out all of the steps to correctly learn the basic principles of algebra. Therefore, when the process becomes more complex, they have a good foundation to build upon.

There will be an important quiz on Friday over the concepts covered so far in chapter one. I won't be assigning homework over the holiday! Enjoy the Blueberry Festival!

Sixth Grade Math With Mrs. S

Since school began on the 17th we have been working very hard on organizational strategies. Students have been required to use a three-ring binder to keep materials for math class. It takes some practice in the beginning, but already class is running smoothly! We have also put an emphasis on using our assignment books at the beginning of each class.

Today we completed our first problem-soving across the curriculum paper. Students had to find a pattern and solve for the missing number. We have spent the last four days working on not only understanding the problem solving process, but writing out the thought process involved. This is a large part of our school improvement plan!

It looks like it's going to be an awesome year in the sixth grade at Lincoln.
